The backbone of the Greek army was the hoplite. This soldier was armed with a spear, two kinds of swords, and a shield. His armor consisted of a muscled or linen cuirass and a helmet. This soldier fought in a phalnax formation. The men were lined up, then, with all the troops, they rushed at their opponent. They usually fought on level ground because no soldier wants to fight uphill. It often ended up that the soldiers would shift around. They would end up turning right. The battle would go on until one line was completely broken through. Then the defeated would run. The victors wouldn't usually chase the enemies because of they were too tired.
